Two Vinmec hospitals received ACC certification for heart failure management

Vinmec Times City (Hanoi) and Vinmec Central Park (HCMC) have recently been awarded the ACC certificate for heart failure management. The application of this standard has resulted in remarkable benefits for patients.

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) accreditation is a globally recognized standard for the management and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. It is considered the foremost benchmark due to its rigorous and comprehensive assessment criteria. For over one year, Vinmec Times City (Hanoi) and Vinmec Central Park (HCMC) have successfully implemented a set of heart failure management procedures that were built, standardized, and updated in accordance with ACC standards. Recently, they have been certified by the ACC Appraisal Board for their adherence to the heart failure management program’s benchmarks.

The certificate has a validity of three years and requires re-evaluation, in order to ensure adherence to standards and continuous improvement of treatment quality. This is a practical step towards perfecting Vinmec Healthcare System’s Center of Excellence (COE) model in the field of Cardiology.

Comprehensive heart failure management has been shown to improve patients’ quality of life, increase life expectancy, and optimize treatment costs.

Heart failure is the ultimate outcome of various cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, and arrhythmia. Heart failure, if left undetected in its early stages, can rapidly deteriorate and progress to acute heart failure, which may result in fatality. However, with appropriate treatment and vigilant monitoring, the condition can be managed effectively. According to recent studies, without proper treatment, up to half of those affected may succumb to the condition within a mere five years of detection – a mortality rate that surpasses that of many types of cancer. According to estimates, Vietnam presently has approximately 1.6 million individuals suffering from heart failure.

Vinmec’s heart failure management activities follow a comprehensive process that spans outpatient or emergency examination to inpatient hospital stay and post-discharge follow-up. Following the latest ACC recommendations, the patient management process is executed with a strict adherence to specific regulations governing professional capacity, treatment methods, treatment duration, assessment quantity, re-examination, etc.. This is done to reduce delays and errors while ensuring optimal results for patients. In order to maintain operational efficiency, the Heart Failure Management Program has implemented an intensive unit led and staffed with members who have been assigned clear and specific tasks. Additionally, the program requires quarterly and yearly training to ensure that staff members are up to date with the latest knowledge on heart failure.

Vinmec boasts a team of highly skilled experts in cardiovascular surgery and intervention. The institution is pioneering in the application of cutting-edge techniques and technologies in Vietnam.

“After 6 months of implementing the management program in accordance with ACC standards at Vinmec Times City Hospital and Vinmec Central Park Hospital, heart failure patients have experienced positive impacts. “Survival” indicators have seen “2 decrease – 1 increase”: a reduction in the rate of re-hospitalization for heart failure, which has dropped from 18% to approximately 0%; a reduction of average hospital stay from 8 days down to 4 days; and an increase in patients’ quality of life”, shared Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Phu – Director of Cardiology at Vinmec Healthcare System.

Vinmec not only prioritizes effective treatment, but also conducts community screening activities to facilitate early detection and timely prevention, as part of their efforts to obtain ACC certification. Heart failure patients are advised to seek advice from rehabilitation and nutrition experts – two important factors in determining the effectiveness of heart failure treatment.

Vinmec, in its pursuit of the ACC certificate, has not only enhanced the quality of medical examination and treatment, but also conducted regular community screening programs aimed at early detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The implementation of the international standard in managing heart failure is poised to bring about significant benefits for cardiovascular patients. These include an improvement in their quality of life, an increase in life expectancy, and the optimization of costs. Additionally, the adoption of this model is expected to reduce the burden on both patients’ families and society at large. The comprehensive management of patients with heart failure has been proven to, on the one hand, improve the quality of treatment and overall well-being of patients and, on the other hand, allow for better utilization of resources through frequent hospital beds rotation and more patient intake.
