Vinmec achieves US-standard Accreditation for Laboratory Testing

The Laboratory Department at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital has recently been recognized by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for its testing standards. This makes it the pioneering hospital in Vietnam to achieve both JCI and CAP accreditations, which are recognized worldwide as the highest quality and most prestigious standards in healthcare.

Global Recognition of Quality

The Laboratory Department at Vinmec Times City Hospital has been CAP-accredited in all areas of its operations, including Hematology – Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry – Immunology, Microbiology – Molecular Biology, Pathology, and Clinical Laboratory Testing.

This accomplishment is the result of two years of relentless efforts by the Laboratory Department of Vinmec Times City International General Hospital to enhance specialized processes. This was done based on 13 rigorous sets of standards with over 1,000 stringent requirements. Throughout this period, the Department also underwent CAP External Inspection Program, meaning that all activities were closely monitored by CAP.

To attain CAP accreditation, Vinmec’s testing procedures have been strictly standardized from sample collection to results receipt.

CAP (College of American Pathologists) is the world’s foremost organization for laboratory quality accreditation. While there are various testing standards applied in different countries, CAP is regarded as the highest and most rigorous standard to achieve. Over 95% of the 8,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide are based in the United States. Therefore, laboratories in any country, once CAP-accredited, are recognized for their patient care quality and expertise in testing worldwide.

“Vinmec Times City’s Laboratory Department is on par with some of the world’s best labs. I am proud that a hospital in Vietnam has such high-quality testing facilities,” stated Dr. Si Nguyen, Head of the CAP Accreditation Appraisal Team, during the final evaluation meeting.

Standardizing testing processes holds great significance, as it serves as the foundation for patient treatment, especially those with conditions such as cancer. Many Vietnamese patients have even chosen to seek medical care abroad to ensure accurate test results from the beginning, avoiding the risk of misdiagnosis. Therefore, Vinmec Times City’s CAP-standard testing would provide great reassurance to both domestic and foreign patients in Vietnam.

Vinmec’s Dual Golden Standards

According to Dr. Truong Cong Duan, Head of the Laboratory Department at Vinmec Times City, the process of establishing and maintaining a quality management system according to CAP standards presents a great opportunity for staff of the  Laboratory Department to self-study, enhance their awareness, and align their practices with the best international practices.

The Laboratory Department of Vinmec Times City International General Hospital is equipped with the most advanced machinery and equipment, coupled with highly skilled personnel to ensure the highest quality and accuracy.

In the long run, the CAP accreditation contributes significantly to strengthening the crucial link between diagnostic and effective treatment, particularly within the context of Vinmec’s active efforts to establish Centers of Excellence (COEs) in Cardiovascular, Oncology, Orthopedics, and Immunology & Allergy, in line with international standards from the United States, Europe, and Australia.

According to medical experts, CAP and JCI are regarded as the two gold standards for hospital quality in the United States, with CAP being the specialized standard for laboratory quality and JCI serving as the overall framework for hospital quality. These two standards complement each other to ensure safety and quality in patient care.

With this recent recognition, Vinmec Times City Hospital is currently the first hospital in the country to be accredited with these two esteemed and rigorous world-class accreditation. 7 years ago, Vinmec Times City also distinguished itself as the pioneering hospital in Vietnam to be JCI-accredited.
