Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan – Director of the Cardiovascular Center at Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital – is acknowledged as an expert trainer in 2 challenging techniques of interventional cardiology – Micra wireless pacemaker implantation and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI).

A novel technique for treating bradycardia, a condition characterized by an abnormally slow heart rate, involves the use of a wireless pacemaker implanted in the patient’s body. This method, which is an alternative to the conventional wired pacemaker implantation, offers several advantages, including short implantation time (30-45 minutes), painless, scar-free, and more effective in stabilizing the patient’s heart rate. This method is recommended for individuals who suffer from keloid scars, metal allergies, or have a very skinny physique.

Micra is developed by Medtronic – the world’s leading medical device company specializing in modern cardiovascular equipment. Medtronic Group is also a training and certification entity for independent experts and professional trainers worldwide, facilitating the transfer of technologies and clinical applications.

When it comes to Micra implantation, the criteria for selecting doctors are extremely stringent. The ideal candidate for the position must possess a distinguished medical background and a remarkable success rate of 99.7%. These doctors then receive training from Medtronic’s global experts in the initial phases or at a specialized facility, until they are proficient enough to perform the procedure without any complications. After which, they will be granted a certificate by Medtronic. As of now, the Asia Pacific region only has 37 recognized Proctors for Micra implantation.

Since 2018, the Micra wireless pacemaker implantation method has been implemented in Vietnam. Specifically, Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan has successfully performed 13 cases with a high success rate. With this achievement, Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan has become the first Vietnamese doctor to be recognized as an independent expert and trainer in Micra wireless pacemaker implantation.

During the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan shared that: “The incidence of arrhythmia in Vietnam has been on the rise, with an average of approximately 5,000 cases per year. This has had a significant impact on the overall quality of life for affected individuals. The Micra wireless pacemaker offers an innovative approach to improving treatment efficiency. Its positive achievements have been recognized globally. With this certificate from Medtronic, we will be able to proactively treat patients and demonstrate the capabilities of Vietnamese doctors”.

According to Dr. Le Quoc Su – Director of Vinmec Central Park Hospital: “With the key goal of building a Center of Excellence for Cardiology, especially cardiovascular intervention, Vinmec Central Park Hospital and other Vinmec hospitals have invested in state-of-the-art equipment and recruited leading experts to carry out advanced, minimally invasive, and internationally recognized techniques.”

According to Vinmec’s representative, in order to allow for greater patient access to advanced technologies for cardiovascular treatment and improve overall quality of life, Vinmec Central Park is willing to collaborate with other institutions in technology transfer, experience sharing, and support in Micra wireless pacemaker implantation.

Renowned for his expertise in Micra implantation, Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan is also a distinguished trainer in Vietnam for TAVI. Since 2017, Vinmec Central Park has performed nearly 100 TAVI cases with a remarkable success rate of over 95%, including complex cases. This demonstrates that Vietnamese doctors are on par with TAVI experts in Southeast Asia.

Following these successes, Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital is set to continue its research and deployment of new cardiovascular intervention techniques. This move is aimed at ensuring that patients have access to advanced technologies in the near future, thereby enhancing treatment efficiency and improvement of individuals’ quality of life.
